Stone-grade tungsten carbide pyrite chisel for fossil preparation, to fit the ZOIC Chicago (models produced or modified after January 2021). The straight chisel is designed for use with softer rocks, e.g. shales, softer limestones. It is not recommended for hard, brittle or well indurated rocks - we suggest purchasing the rounded chisel instead if this is what you work on. Excellent for smoothing matrix.

Please note that this stylus will only fit the latest ZOIC Chicago model (the upgraded version produced after January 2021 or retrofitted by ZOIC PalaeoTech after this date). If you’re not sure, contact us and we will get you sorted!

Why won’t this stylus fit all of the ZOIC Chicago’s?

As of January 2021, we upgraded the ZOIC Chicago to incorporate a positivestylus locking mechanism, which means that the newer models can be fitted with a chisel that will never spin or rotate when in use. For any tools purchased prior to this date, we are offering a free-of-charge retrofitting service.

If you have purchased a ZOIC Chicago before these latest modifications, do not worry! We understand that these are big changes and we will retrofit your ZOIC Chicago free-of-charge to accept the new stylus options. When you buy from us, we want you to know that you will always have the best service we can give you, and this is no exception. Please contact us if you would like your ZOIC Chicago purchased before January 2021 to be retrofitted and you have not received an email with further information or would like us to resend the information.

We do not offer a chisel option with the 1.0 ZOIC Chicago, purchased before January 2021, that has not been retrofitted to accept the locking mechanism. Our new positive stylus locking mechanism is a permanent and elegant solution for the fossil preparator, allowing for maximum versatility and function.

You do not have to upgrade your tool. We are not phasing out the 1.0 styli and will continue to always have a supply of them on hand and ready for immediate dispatch. We understand how important spares are, and it is important that as manufacturers of unique products that we will be here to provide parts for you in the decades to come.

Can I use this stylus in the CP-9361?

No. This stylus will not fit in the Chicago Pneumatic CP-9361. If you would like to convert your existing CP-9361 into a ZOIC Chicago, optimised for fossil preparation, check out our modification kits. We also stock original and genuine CP-9361 styli that will fit that model.

I have a custom request, can you make me a specific stylus to fit my ZOIC Chicago?

We are also happy to accommodate requests for geometries, shapes or lengths of stylus that are not otherwise listed. Many experienced fossil preparators have their own specific and custom preferences for chisel geometries, lengths etc. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

What is tungsten carbide?

Stone-grade tungsten carbide is by far the best material for fossil preparation – it withstands the abrasive nature of rock and stays sharp far longer than other metals like steel which will quickly blunt and wear down to nothing. However, tungsten carbide can be brittle. A stylus can last many years without requiring replacement when looked after correctly.
