2.5mm diameter pointed stylus, made from stone-grade tungsten carbide for fossil preparation. This stylus fits the ZOIC Chicago (please read below to select the correct option).

As of January 2021 we have upgraded the ZOIC Chicago to incorporate a positive stylus locking mechanism to prevent chisel rotation, which means that the newer models can be fitted with a chisel that will never spin or rotate when in use. This means that there are two slightly different variants of stylus available - one to fit the older models, and one type to fit the newer.

If you have purchased a ZOIC Chicago before these latest modifications, do not worry! We understand that these are big changes and we will retrofit your ZOIC Chicago free-of-charge to accept the new stylus options. When you buy from us, we want you to know that you will always have the best service we can give you, and this is no exception. Please contact us if you would like your ZOIC Chicago purchased before January 2021 to be retrofitted and you have not received an email with further information or would like us to resend the information.

I purchased my ZOIC Chicago before January 2021 but I have had it upgraded by ZOIC PalaeoTech

Choose the 2.0 option.

I purchased my ZOIC Chicago before January 2021 and I have not had it upgraded by ZOIC PalaeoTech

Choose the 1.0 option if you have a ZOIC Chicago that was purchased before January 2021 that has not been upgraded to fit the 2.0 version of stylus. Make sure that the diameter of tungsten carbide matches exactly what you currently have in your tool – the standard is 2.5mm but some customers have requested 2mm diameter.

You do not have to upgrade your tool. We are not phasing out the 1.0 styli and will continue to always have a supply of them on hand and ready for immediate dispatch. We understand how important spares are, and it is important that as manufacturers of unique products that we will be here to provide parts for you in the decades to come.

If you’re not sure, contact us and we will get you sorted!

Can I use this stylus in the CP-9361?

No. This stylus will not fit in the Chicago Pneumatic CP-9361. If you would like to convert your existing CP-9361 into a ZOIC Chicago, optimised for fossil preparation, check out our modification kits. We also stock original and genuine CP-9361 styli that will fit that model.

I have a custom request, can you make me a specific stylus to fit my ZOIC Chicago?

We are also happy to accommodate requests for geometries, shapes or lengths of stylus that are not otherwise listed. Many experienced fossil preparators have their own specific and custom preferences for chisel geometries, lengths etc. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

What is tungsten carbide?

Stone-grade tungsten carbide is by far the best material for fossil preparation – it withstands the abrasive nature of rock and stays sharp far longer than other metals like steel which will quickly blunt and wear down to nothing. However, tungsten carbide can be brittle. A stylus can last many years without requiring replacement when looked after correctly.
